This is an expanded version (nine new cuts) of a 1994 album of previously unreleased songs by the Motown superstar, and it sounds for all the world like a Gaye's greatest-hits album piped in from some alternate universe. The songs, stylistically very much of a piece with Gaye's actual hits, are at once tantalizingly familiar and exotic, and it's safe to say that many (if not most of them) would have been successful had they been released at the time. High points include the almost Basie-esque big-band blues "Say When"; "Court of the Common Plea," a divorce song with a "Heard It Through the Grapevine"-esque backing track; "Gotta Say It," which has the same gospel feel as "Can I Get a Witness"; and the soaring "Darling You're Wonderful," where Gaye does a flawless imitation of Sam Cooke at the fade.
