Grand Funk Railroad's 1970 somewhat eponymous album, their second for Capitol, is characteristic of the classic rock radio sound that would permeate the airwaves of the late 20th century. Grand Funk Railroad was a seminal force in giving the friendlier side of the heavy rock sound its charm and making it stick. Built on fuzzed-out blues riffs, simple lyrics, and at times seemingly unnecessary jamming, Grand Funk's songs are mild in nature. Far less extreme than Black Sabbath, but slightly toothier than Foghat or Bad Company, Grand Funk's major influence is from the loose, blues-based power trio formula of bands such as Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience. Grand Funk combines rawness with radio-friendly melodies and vocal harmonies that would become their trademark sound. Hordes of bands to come, from Foreigner to Bon Jovi, would emulate Grand Funk's sound and style, focusing on good-time rocking material while attempting a few token social commentary pieces. This is a good album as far as early hard rock goes, and as Grand Funk Railroad would move farther and farther away from the type of roughness and loose arrangements found here, it is well worth picking up as an example of one of their early efforts.

As one of the most popular California pop/rock bands of the '70s, the Doobie Brothers evolved from a mellow, post-hippie boogie band to a slick, soul-inflected pop band by the end of the decade. Titled "Undertones: An Anthology", the set stands out from all other Undertones "best of" compilations for one reason, the second CD that is included in this set. It compiles 27 previously unreleased demos, rare unheard recordings, and live tracks. Disc one compiles a 29 song set of songs from the bands career. This includes a large majority of songs from the bands first two albums (Undertones (1979), and Hypnotized (1980)). It also includes a few selections from the bands later albums, which veered from their original sound. Keep it near the top of your CD pile, and treat yourself to teenage kicks right through your life.

In the late 70's & 80's it wasn't hard to find punk bands that were enamored by 50's & 60's Rock 'N Roll. Although The Veterans weren't formed in these days their work is retrospective to when punk bands showed their affection for early Rock 'N Roll by adapting the sound and adding their own flair to it. This self titled album is filled to the rim with The Beach Boys influenced Surf Rock, like numerous bands before them, but with one major difference; The Veterans do it much better than most who are trying to get this poppy surf sound. The album is drenched with catchy hooks, combining electric keyboard effects , laser sharp harmonies and even an occasional Ukulele sound for authenticity. Classic novelty songs such as 'Hula Girl' & 'Charlie & The Surfboard Factory' exude Beach Boys flavor without boundaries, putting the expectations for an attempt at Surf Rock by any other punk band to a much higher level. This album seems to transcend Rock & Roll genre and generation by creating a bridge from old time early 60's surfers to today's Punk Rockers by creating something that they could all musically relate to.
