Smokie is an English rock band from Bradford, Yorkshire who found success in the rest of Europe in the 1970s. The jewel in the crown of the RAK label catalog following the decline of the truly glorious glam rock years, Smokie's five-year sequence of hit singles saw them effortlessly ride through the mid- to late-'70s with some of the era's most melodic sounds -- "Living Next Door to Alice," "Lay Back in the Arms of Someone" and "I'll Meet You at Midnight" may not set the pulse a-racing with the same giddy aplomb as producers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman's work with Mud, Sweet and Suzi Quatro, but still they made fine 45's, and Smokie remained a soft spot in the heart for anybody yearning for the old days to return.
